Meet Berlin based designer Millicent Nobis and her jewellery brand Mies Nobis.
Millicent Nobis comes from Katoomba, a small town in Australia.
Mies Nobis takes part again at the designer market of FASHIONCLASH Festival with her amazing must have jewellery designs.

Q&A with designer Millicent Nobis:

How would you describe your work?

A fascination with modern minimalism and tribal jewellery made of horn & bone.

What is your technique?
Hand made pieces in brass & silver, hand carved horn or wood.

What is your most name worthy achievement up to now in relation to fashion?
Being selected by the Vogue Italy to be part of last years Dubai Mall talent showcase, and meeting guests like Franca Sozzani, Karolina Kurkova & Lily Cole was pretty exciting.

Who are your artistic influences or inspirations? Why?
I love the work of German art jewellery Karl Fritsch’s. His use of precious materials is irreverent and exciting.

Graphic design: Laura Knoops
Finding your own voice is difficult, where and how do you find your personal creativity?
I just try not to compare my work with other peoples’ work, and focus on the process rather than the final product.

“Fashion is quite a dated concept. I think the focus is moving more towards the actual item, the fabrication, the craftsmanship, and the story.”

Have you recently experienced something that totally blew your mind?
I was in Asia recently and it blew my mind how bad the rubbish disposal is. I realize how much I take for granted such good recycling systems in Australia and Germany.

What is your most favorite accessory? Why?
Rings, lots of rings, and a bright red lipstick. They are small and easy style details.

How would you define fashion?
Fashion is quite a dated concept. I think the focus is moving more towards the actual item, the fabrication, the craftsmanship, and the story.

What are the key factors in your design?
Simplicity, quality and individual kind of beauty.

What makes your items different from others? What is your designing philosophy?
I try not to over think it. I think everyone has an individual style anyway there is no reason to force it. I just do what I like, and work with people, materials or processes that I find interesting.

"It’s about skin, texture, muscle shape, the outline of the body, figurative art, romanesque sculpture."

Fashion needs to progress year in year out, how do you keep innovating?
It’s quite organic. I don’t want to keep doing the same thing over and over, so just the process of trying new things creates new outcomes.

What is the contemporary condition of fashion in your place of residence?

Berlin is quite a melting pot of style as a lot of international people live here. German’s is chic but practical, I like that.

What is your ultimate goal?
An end to world hunger.

What are your views on gender categorization in fashion?
I think obviously men and woman have different bodies, so it makes sense to have some kind of categorization. But we are coming from a past of too many separations. And since fashion likes to push boundaries, we are definitely heading towards a merging of the original borders of gender, which is very interesting, and will be interesting to see what new definitions will be established.

Do you believe the western binary gender system (male/female) will eventually disappear?
It’s hard to imagine it will disappear altogether, but maybe lessen in the way that race or sexual preferences has. Within my friends and family, there are many different racial backgrounds, but it is of little relevance in a definitory sense.

Millicent with Franca Sozzani of Vogue Italy
What are your thoughts on the idea that unisex is the new androgynous in fashion?
I am no expert, but today my jeans are unisex and my jumper was my boyfriend’s, so you could have a point.

What does your collection try to communicate? What is it about?
It’s about skin, texture, muscle shape, the outline of the body, figurative art, romanesque sculpture. I still have to put it into better words actually.

Why have you decided to participate at FASHIONCLASH?
I really enjoyed the experience last year.

What can we expect from you at the festival?
Hopefully great things!

Why have you decided to participate at FASHIONCLASH Festival once again?
It’s an interesting market. The visitors are not those typical fashion/trend people but people with an individual taste and appreciation of interesting design.

Who are your target consumers? How do you define them?
They are incredibly stylish individuals, and they constantly surprise me.

What is your price range?
Between 60 - 450 euro.

How do you balance between the function of the items and the appearance of them?

I think of appearance, shape and structure first. But since I don’t wear things that are overly complicated, so that is important in finalizing the piece.

Origin Passion and Beliefs

An international encounter orginized by Fiera di Vicenza and Not Just A Label.

Originally launched in May 2014, ORIGIN PASSION AND BELIEFS was conceived in collaboration with Fiera di Vicenza President Matteo Marzotto and Stefan Siegel, Founder of NOT JUST A LABEL. The intention: to create an innovative fashion event pairing global independent design talent with Italy’s most distinguished manufacturers.

From the 14th until the 18th of May I found myself (on behalf of FASHIONCLASH) in Vicenza, the historic centre of fashion design and textile manufacturing in Italy.
The second edition of Origin Passion and Beliefs brought together 100 emerging designers from all over the globe together with the experts of Italian manufacturing industry, international fashion institutions. The 4 day event included a variety of lectures and talks. Eventually the fair was closed with the Mittelmoda Fashion Award.

“Made in Italy is synonymous with quality and luxury. I am passionate about Italian manufacturing. I believe it is our responsibility to stimulate our economy while welcoming the next generation of fashion stars.” says Fiera di Vicenza President Matteo Marzotto.

“We have curated an unprecedented list from around the world. Designers from emerging markets such as Serbia, Ukraine, Brazil, Lebanon, Lithuania and Indonesia have been invited along with talent from the Italy, UK, USA, Canada, South Korea, Japan, Australia and many more. The designers were selected for their commercial viability, their commitment to handcraftsmanship, sustainability, and their point of differentiation. This is an amazing privilege and honor for the brands to meet with some of the industry’s most notable leaders. Our goal is to empower artisanship and individuality and to combat fast fashion,” says Stefan Siegel.

Vicenza historical center
Scouting talents is one of my core activities and finding myself under the roof among 100 talented designers was a blast. The outstanding selection of designers featured familiar names but also many new names. The fair was divided in several segments: Leather, Stone, Textile and Technology. Furthermore OPB invited 20 institutions such as FASHIONCLASH, Fashion Forward Dubai, Belgrade Fashion Week Design Collective, Esmod Berlin, Worth Project, Doing Fashion and Maisons de Mode.

FASHIONCLASH Festival Pop-Up Expo at Bonnefantenmuseum

Dries van Noten, AW 2014/14
Pop-up expo by Modemuseum Hasselt & Bonnefantenmuseum
during FASHIONCLASH Festival
2015 03.06.2015 - 14.06.2015

Fashion is considered to be an important medium for individual self expression, as well as for the genderrelated aspects of this indentity. It's traditionally split into womens- and mensfashion, but because of its expressive character, fashion has become a platform for breaking down conventional social roles. Additionally, the fashionchoices of gender variant people illustrate that biological sex is a relative concept in fashion. Furthermore, the fashion world adapted this crossgender approach as a strategy causing the cross-fertilization of men's and women's clothing to grow more and more apparent throughout the recent years. Since the arrival of genderneutral clothing the ends of the genderspectrum have gotten explicitly entangled. People now have complete freedom of choice to express themselves how and as who they want.
FASHIONCLASH Festival 2015 wants to celebrate self expression. That's why they collaborated with Modemuseum Hasselt and Bonnefantenmuseum Maastricht to set up this pop-up exhibition as an element of their gender program. The expo travels through the costume and fashion history of the 20th century to show that gender has always been a precondition for fashion design and that fashion has always played a role in gender fluidity.

The Belgians: An Unexpected Fashion Story

05 JUNE ’15 / 13 SEPTEMBER ’15

The Bozar Centre for Fine Arts, Belgium’s oldest and largest arts centre, dedicates a major exhibition to the DNA of Belgian fashion and its contribution to the international fashion scene. Titled “The Belgians: An Unexpected Fashion Story”, the exhibition features more than 100 designs, from the first pioneers like Norine De Schrijver and her legendary Maison Morin of the 20’s to young promises like the KRJST collective, The Belgians intends to tell a comprehensive story of Belgian fashion design, paying tribute to its bold originality and excellent craftsmanship.

Surreal, avant-garde and explicit. These are three keywords that are usually associated with Belgian fashion, which is internationally recognised. This exhibition gives a unique historic overview of the DNA of Belgian fashion, starting with the legendary Antwerp Six (including Dries van Noten, Walter Van Beirendonck and Ann Demeulemeester) and working up to the individualistic creations of Martin Margiela, A.F. Vandevorst and Raf Simons. The exhibition also highlights the works of several influential players in various fashion and art disciplines. We will also touch upon the importance of the fashion academies, especially the Antwerp Academy and La Cambre in Brussels. Naturally this exhibition would not be complete without emerging talent like Jean-Paul Lespagnard and Christian Wijnants.

One Wolf at FASHIONCLASH Festival 2015

Introduction to Agnese Narnicka, designer behind the brand One Wolf, based in Riga, Latvia.
She has been a clothing designer for 9 years. Agnese Narnicka already started her professional career when she was still studying at the Art Academy of Latvia. Last year, her “Repair” collection was presented in the prestigious 29th Festival of Fashion and Photography in Hyères, France. This year, she will introduce her UNIFORM collection at the designer market of FASHIONCLASH Festival (June 11-14) in Maastricht.

http://www.onewolf.lv/

Q&A with designer Agnese Narnicka:

How would you describe your work?
My approach to fashion design is very individual. The initial period, when the idea appears, is very instinctive and spontaneous. The idea is actualised in the first fashion illustrations, reflecting not only the clothing but also its actual character. I enjoy creating collections that have a concept based on a specific story. When I have an idea for this story and the hero of the story is known, I would start some more extensive works of research and look for more detailed sources for inspiration. After that comes the final sketches, fabric selection, technical drawings of the pieces, ideas for possible treatments of the fabric, constructions, and the sewing of examples.

Have you shown your collections before? If so, where?
One Wolf regularly presents its collections to a broader public both locally and internationally. In Latvia, we show our collections at Riga Fashion Week. Internationally, we have participated in the "Who's next" show in Paris, the "Bread and Butter" show, the "Projektgallery" showroom, and Berlin's Fashion Week. What’s more, we have also presented ourselves in Japan and Great Britain. And, last year's "Repair" collection was also presented in the prestigious 29th International Festival of Fashion and Photography in Hyères, France.

What do you strive to be?
We strive to be an intelligent and substantively interesting brand that creates light and functional designs. Therefore, we constantly looks for new approaches to design. Continuous growth and self realisation are important to us in both the creative and commercial senses.

“We create unisex denim pants by ignoring or drastically transforming the classic detailing of jeans.”

Who are your artistic influences or inspirations? Why?
The biggest inspiration for One Wolf is people. Often, it is specifically those unique individuals in the large crowds of the city. My own interests also include current topics for the whole society on a global scale, because fashion is the reflection of the culture of the time. Fashion depicts the level of our social life and our spiritual values.

Finding your own voice is difficult, where and how do you find your personal creativity?
For me personally, the most exciting part is the "catching" of an idea. The moment when an idea and new trends appear in your head is usually an unplanned process, not a deliberate one. Then I work towards developing the idea and my vision by researching the topic of interest. Sometimes, I would dive very deep into research, not only looking for visual materials but also studying literature about the specific topic.

What was the most important thing your parents taught you, that you now bring into your work?
Definitely the attitude towards work. To not do things carelessly, to take responsibility for your own work. Most importantly, respect for other people and their work. Have you recently experienced something that totally blew your mind? The new innovative fabrics that are similar to aluminium foil. They are perfect for the idea of a new collection for One Wolf with the name "Lander".

Which item in your wardrobe really typifies you? Why?
Definitely jeans. And they are definitely not typical only for me, but for most global inhabitants. I think that we would be surprised if we count how many people that we meet every day are wearing jeans. At the same time, jeans are also the main product of the One Wolf brand. Granted, we mostly create unisex denim pants by ignoring or drastically transforming the classic detailing of jeans.

What is your most favorite accessory? Why?
For me, it is the backpack. Because it is fundamentally necessary in everyday life. I must say that it is not easy to find a good backpack! Thus, we have also begun our extensive research of this product and tried to develop new design ideas.

What is your most favorite brand? Why?
There are definitely several. But, if I have to mention only one, then - Yohji Yamamoto. I like not only his unique signature, design, and mastery in clothing constructions but also his philosophy and conviction about the role of fashion in our modern world.

“Fashion is a reflection of ourselves. It is society's mirror, which confirms the current values of society and attitudes towards one another.”

How would you define fashion?
Fashion is a reflection of ourselves. It is society's mirror, which confirms the current values of society and attitudes towards one another. It changes exactly as much as we change.

What are the key factors in your design?
They are denim, unisex, and functionality and cleverness in details, construction, and the concept of a collection.

What makes your items different from others? What is your designing philosophy?
We create clothing for people, so that they would feel comfortable in their daily activities, while also sensing our unique design language that is austere, yet clever.

Fashion needs to progress year in year out, how do you keep innovating?
Experience helps the most. We try to learn from our own mistakes. And it's important to also preserve our strengths.

What do you want to achieve with your projects?
We address both males and females, because we offer the concept of unisex clothing.

“We think that differentiation between male and female is not that essential. Most important is the actual person, his personality, conviction, taste, and lifestyle.”

What are your views on gender categorization in fashion?
We think that differentiation between male and female is not that essential. Most important is the actual person, his personality, conviction, taste, and lifestyle.

Do you believe the western binary gender system (male/female) will eventually disappear?
I think that the strict division will continue to become less clear, but it will never completely disappear.

What are your thoughts on the idea that unisex is the new androgynous in fashion?
Yes, an androgynous character is one of the results of the unisex idea. However, it can vary greatly and will always be closer to either masculine or feminine characteristics. It will never have a 50/50 proportion. Exactly as in nature.

What does your collection try to communicate? What is about?
Uniform is a unisex collection dedicated to urban residents. It is like a daily uniform, which essentially could be called a survival kit for the resident of the modern metropolis. Each piece of clothing is given a number 1-13. Items are available in several colours, which allows innumerable combinations to be created by mixing the items together.

Why have you decided to participate at FASHIONCLASH?
Because of good reviews given by designers known to us both locally in Latvia and internationally.

What can we expect from you at the festival?
We would like to introduce our brand and the concept, aesthetic, and functionality of the UNIFORM collection. It will be possible to see the UNIFORM clothing and purchase it at the Designer MARKET of FASHIONCLASH.

Who are your target consumers? How do you define them?
Our most typical target customers are 20-40 year old males and females. Most importantly, they are people who have a young heart, regardless of their age. They are energetic and curious.

What is your price range?
28 EUR – 230 EUR.

How do you balance between the function of the items and the appearance of them?
Everything lies in construction, quality, and taste.

Joelle Boers at FASHIONCLASH Festival 2015

Get to know JOELLE BOERS, who comes from the little Dutch town Geleen near Maastricht. After her studies in Graphic Design and Photography, she desired to explore the world of Fashion and Textile Design at MAFAD (Maastricht Academy Fine Arts and Design).
She has been involved in many FASHIONCLASH events and projects.
Joelle will present her debut, self-designed collection at FASHIONCLASH Festival Show Program and purchase her designs at the designer Market.
In addition she takes part at Designers in Store within festival's Side Program, her work will be presented and sold at Stijl Maastricht boutique.

How would you describe your work ? What is your technique?
From my childhood on, I had always a passion for illustrations/photography and collaging. My work is a reflection of my fascination by the aesthetics of all things: natural phenomena, technological and cultural identity. I am heavily influenced by materials and their surfaces, blending hand painting, patterns and photography, By connecting these diverse elements my label has developed a unique aesthetic. Through fabric and dexterous print design, far-reaching stories are told. Trying to show a transition from ancient cultures into a more futuristic type of beauty.

Finding your own voice is difficult, where and how do you find your personal creativity (before you start designing; during the design process)?
In the world there is so much going on, the technology goes very fast, your privacy is everywhere…So I think it’s important to stay close to yourself, your emotions your strength and weakness, show to people how you think about that, make a statement. Sometimes I find inspiration on the streets, in nature, or sometimes from an old movie, and then I try to combine those things together to my own vision of beauty.

Which item in your wardrobe really typifies you and why?
My shoes; I collect shoes for over 8 years now, from grungy boots, to bold sneakers and very high heels and sandals! I love shoes, from Topshop, Zara or a high end brands like Alexander Wang, without the perfect shoe your outfit is boring!
What is your most favorite accessory and why?
My Alexander Wang Rocco Duffle Bag, it’s edgy and raw just like my style, I bought it with the money that I won with a design contest in 2010! And my dogs! I can’t live without them..! My 8 year old Husky Luca, who’s my biggest support in rough times… and my new 7 month old puppy Jax ofcourse! They match with every outfit ;)
Joelle and her dog
What is your most favorite brand and why?
Balenciaga (Alexander Wang) because of the way he mixes sport with feminine chic and Alexander McQueen because he had the technical and creative skill to create his own dark universe. Each of his pieces has layers of meaning: as you move closer, you discover scales, shells with ragged-knife edges, peacock feathers, coral reefs, jellyfish, entire marine ecosystems.

How would you define fashion?
“Fashion is just the medium “ said McQueen.

What do you strive for in your work?
Wearable and unique designs for man and woman, mostly unisex, limited in stock and made with care for the environment.

What are your views on gender categorization in fashion ? (as in differentiating between male/female collections, is this necessary ?)
I think in this century we are ready for genderless categorization, just wear what feels good and who you want to be.

What are your thoughts on the idea that unisex is the new androgynous in fashion ?
I think it is not about harnessing a 'trend' but rather tapping into a mind-set and acknowledging and responding a cultural shift that is happening now.

What does your collection try to communicate (what is about)?
My upcoming collection called E Y W A and elaborates on the idea, that the entire biosphere acts like a single organism, or at least a complex system and that the Earth is consciously manipulating the biosphere in order to make conditions more favorable to life.

Inspired by E Y W A I created creatures and adventurers who are each an individual, morphing insects, plant species and stone patterns together to create my own type of futuristic beauty and cultural identity of the Navi warriors, a new urban style.

Why have you decided to participate at FASHIONCLASH Festival again?
Because I wanted to achieve my next goal; textile designer goes fashion designer. This is the first time I created a ready to wear collection all by myself. And FASHIONCLASH Festival is the perfect fashion festival to connect with the international fashion industry!

What can we expect from you at the festival?
For the show at FCF2015 I collaborate with the talented Czech designer Sofya Samareva (designer market participant), she is going to design some amazing cap-hats for my collection, so I hope we will make a statement with catwalk debut! ;)

Who are your target consumers? How do you define them?
My target group are mostly people between 18 and 35 years old, man and woman, who are brave enough to wear my bold prints ;) My price range is between 50 and 450 euro, it depends on which design piece it is, how exclusive and the work it costs me.

MEAN HEAN by Hean Kim - Student at I-Arts Maastricht
Lisa Schamlé studies performance art at the Theatre Academy in Maastricht. She mostly works with photog- raphy, or as an actress. La voie De La Perspective tries to create a pluralistic understanding of the identity of veiled (Islamic) women. A celebration of the aesthetics of the hijab culture. An invitation for considering the many reasons why women wear them. La voie De La Perspective is a series of self-portraits.

Luca Tichelman, student at Toneelacademie Maastricht, will present one of her performances.

Malou Beemer & Eef Lubbers - Kimbow

Kimbow is an interdisciplinary project between industrial designer Eef Lubbers and fashion designer and researcher Malou Beemer, in which fashion meets technology. Body language and an interactive colour changing textile where the base for a dress which responds to the posture of the wearer. This silent form of communication is amplified by a movement in colour. With this design Eef and Malou show their vision on wearable technology and the future of fashion, and how these industries can strengthen each other on the way to innovation.

Malou Beemer is a Fashion Designer and Researcher who obtained a Master of Arts in Fashion Communication Design. Her concepts are based on observations of movement, interaction and negative space. Often inspired by natural and instinctive human behaviour towards each other and the space around them. She is exploring new possibilities in fashion by combining different disciplines and using new technologies . Her latest research is based in integrating body language in fashion design.

Eef Lubbers is an industrial designer, specialized in combining technology, textile and fashion. She is currently graduating for a master’s degree in Industrial Design at the Eindhoven University of Technology. Her work is characterized by the development of innovative textile and materials which she uses in her designs with a focus on aesthetics and interaction. Craftsmanship is a source of inspiration, which her most known work Unlace clearly shows.

The MIJNcollectie will also be on display at Museum aan het vrijthof in Maastricht from 8 — 14 June during the FASHIONCLASH Festival.

For the Year of Mines (M2015 ) SCHUNCK* initiates an 'update' of the old miners' clothing, in cooperation with Stichting M2015, 100% Heerlen and FASHIONCLASH. The three young designers from Limburg, Linda Friesen, Ebby Port and Gabriel Guevera present their contemporary version of miners clothing as a second skin for Heerlen.

Joanne Vosloo
For more than 60 years, the ArtEZ Institute of the Arts in Arnhem has been delivering successful fashion designers.
Viktor & Rolf, Jan Taminiau, Iris van Herpen, Bas Kosters, Liselore Frowijn and many more.
ArtEZ Graduation Show 2015 was no exception, with their 21 graduate collections there was plenty of excitement to experience. Clearly the ArtEZ students don't fear to experiment with patterns and to apply material manipulations that lead to innovation.
The show kicked off with fashion film presentation of 1st and 2nd year students and Fashion and The Sea project. Collectie Arnhem, by 3rd year students
was the first show to see on the runway. But eventually it is all about the graduate collection with strong proposals by Isabelle Tellié, Diek Pothoven,  Joanne Vosloo, Yvette Peek, Marieke van de Ven, Madelène van Ulden, Josephine Goverts and Max Zara Sterck.

Five designers are finalists for the Frans Molenaar Award 2015: Lilian Admiraal, Josephine Goverts, Max Zara Sterck, Tung Trinh and Maartje Janse.
Also nominated for the Frans Molenaar are the two ArtEZ Fashion Master graduates Sunanda Koning and Simeon Morris. The last name, Simeo Morris, is showing at 7th edition of FASHIONCLASH Festival (June 11-14).

The two ArtEZ representatives for the Lichting 2015 supported by V&D award are Isabelle Tellié and Yvette Peek.
Lichting 2015 show takes place during Amsterdam Fashion Week on 10th of July.

If you still want to see the work of the graduates you can visit their graduation exhibition from Juy 1-5 at the former ABN AMRO building (Gele Rijdersplein in Arnhem).

FASHIONCLASH Festival 2015, the 7th edition of the international and interdisciplinary fashion festival took place last week from June 11th – 14th in Maastricht. The 4-day festival program complete with fashion shows showcased upcoming creative talent, exhibitions, fashion film, awards, theatre and dance performances, lectures, workshops and a dynamic Side Program, which gave promising young talents from across the globe the opportunity to present their work to a diverse international audience and industry professionals.
The 7th edition of the festival presented more than 150 talents from over 30 countries. It was a very sunny weekend with happy visitors and radiant designers and artists, the shows were packed and sold out. The whole of Maastricht was dominated by fashion and the celebration of talent and diversity.

GENDER Edition, celebration of diversity and self-expression
FASHIONCLASH believes that fashion as an art form can stimulate critical debate about current controversial issues which are discussed in society. This year's overarching theme during the FC Festival was GENDER. The theme shaped the overall festival and was interwoven through the program inviting the audience to think about the broader spectrum within the gender codes. The theme was mostly reflected in the Gender exhibition on main location, the Opening Show with VERWEVEN 2015 project by theatre performer Nina Willems, Fashion Talk with Aynouk Tan, Meet the Maker at Bureau Europe and the Tabula Rasa dance performance that literally brought the festival's campaign image of the festival to life. Tabula Rasa is a joint project of FASHIONCLASH, Project Sally Maastricht and Mieke Kockelkorn. The festival's main location scenography and spatial design was designed by Studio Stad inspired by 'Queer Space' and gender.

GENDER - EXHIBITION
The fashion shows were complemented by a multidisciplinary exhibition where a selection of creative work curated around the theme of gender was exhibited. The former interior design factory of Mosa was temporarily transformed into an innovative museum, where selected art works relayed the different visions of gender in various ways. Think among others photography, illustration, clothing, video, object and shoe design. In the exhibition the visitors had the chance to browse through installations by designers such as Maison the Faux, Amber Ambrose Aurele & Kesha Felipa, Begüm Yıldırım, Matthijs Holland, Camiel Fortgens and a fashion performance by Juliëtte Heijnen. One of the highlights of the exhibition was the 25 meters long digital painting 'Openinghours' on fabric by designer Flora Miranda.

VERWEVEN 2015, a performance project created by theatre performer Nina Willems, was yet again one of the main attractions of the exhibition. Three people were asked to tell the stories behind the clothes that they wear. How do these clothes reflect their personalities, memories and feelings? And how do they use their clothes to express gender? Every interview resulted in a short film. For every person that was interviewed, one young designer created an entirely new outfit which reflected their personality. Designers David Laport, Loes van Nijnatten en Schueller de Waal were all invited to take part.

CLASH PROJECT
Visitors were also able to visit the ‘Clash Project’, one of the main highlights of the festival, in the exhibition area. The project placed its focus on the connection between disciplines and visions. In other words it embodied the interdisciplinary spirit FASHIONCLASH tries to propagate. Ten non-fashion designers were invited to share their vision according to their artistic discipline in relation to fashion. Ultimately this lead to a 'clash' of philosophical, cultural and practical methodologies. As a result a new hybrid discipline took form.
Each year Clash project causes a clash and fascination by the audience with surprising proposals and out-of the box creativity. This year again, we enjoyed creations by Charlotte Van de Velde, Roos Gomperts, Alexandra Karpilovski, Jan Pieter Kaptein and Stefan Auberg.

Gender and Fashion

Curated exhibition at FASHIONCLASH Festival 2015

Gender is the sociocultural identity that relates to a person’s biological sex. it is said that this identity is a performance, since there is not only one way to male or female. Gender is perceived as a spectrum nowadays. it’s a stirring topic that has also been very present in fashion this year due to fashion’s ability to reflect one’s mood, personality and identity to theworld.
FASHIONCLASH Festival takes a stand for gender diversity and individualism. the festival wants to raise awareness about the problems that occur when it comes to gender issues and how crucial public opinion about it can be. that’s why this exposition gathers artists that are also challenged to think about the different aspects of gender. they offer the viewer a new perspective by illustrating what gender means to them individually. For instance, the works address gender in other cultures, transgenderism, gender in history, gender in media, body expression, etcetera are exhibited. FASHIONCLASH Festival brings together these different works and visions and celebrates self expression and diversity.

VERWEVEN 2015, the gender edition

A project of theatrical performer Nina Willems in the context of FASHIONCLASH Festival

What do the clothes you wear tell us about who you are? And what is the role of clothing in relation to GENDER?
For "VERWEVEN", 3 people where asked to tell the stories behind the clothes they wear. How do these clothes reflect their personalities and memories? And how do they use clothes to express their gender?
Every interview resulted in a short film. For every person that is interviewed, one young designer created an entirely new outfit, that reflects their personality.

VERWEVEN 2015 was the opening performance of FASHIONCLASH Festival.
Transgender model Gia Bab took the first steps on the runway this edition wearing creation by David Laport. The performance was accompanied by Bird Gehrl song by Antony and the Johnsons. Following Gia, Milou van Duijnhoven and Selm Wenselaers took the stage. Three beautiful human beings where wearing outfits inspired by their own story. All together an unforgettable experience and perfect embodiment of the festival's gender topic.

For FASHIONCLASH Festival 2015, Nina Willems created " VERWEVEN LIVE", an impressive installation that engaged the visitors of the festival. The VERWEVEN installation invited the visitors

to tell the stories about the clothes they wore at the moment. This short stories where edited right away and included in the installation as short documentaries that show personal stories about the clothes we wear and about the role fashion plays in our daily lives, and in particular how fashion plays a role in our gender expression.

The Mutants performance by Lotte Milder at FASHIONCLASH Festival 2015

The Mutants is a performance that stems from a fascination with constant change and a desire for stasis. It features three performers and their costumes, each of which undergoes a transformation: from one object to a specific gender. The Mutants poses the question: what will these beings evolve into next?
